Highway 101: Carpinteria will add a peak-period carpool lane to the freeway in each direction within the City of Carpinteria.  The new lanes will tie into recently added third lanes to the south and upcoming projects to the north.

New bridges will be built over Franklin and Santa Monica Creeks.  There will be freeway on- and off-ramp improvements at Santa Monica Road, Carpinteria Avenue, and Reynolds Avenue. Six new sound walls will be constructed to reduce freeway noise for neighbors.

On local streets, there will be improvements to the intersections at Santa Monica Road & Via Real, Reynolds & Carpinteria Avenues, and Bailard Avenue & the freeway ramps.

The timeline is a reference tool to show planned improvements and key closures.

The timing may change to accommodate modifications from the contractor, weather delays, and to improve construction.

Construction will begin in spring 2020 and continue with landscaping into the summer of 2023. Highway 101 will have 2 lanes open in each direction during daytime construction. There will be nighttime closures with signed detours as needed. The new freeway carpool lanes will open near the end of 2022.

The bridges at Franklin and Santa Monica Creeks will be replaced to accommodate adding a new third lane in each direction on Highway 101 and to improve water flow in the creeks. There will be new sound walls on the bridges to reduce neighborhood noise.
